I recently read an article on mini quilts, and yes it really grabbed my attention. I just knew it was something I had to try. Before I knew it, I was designing this cute and homely heart and shoo fly mini quilt. A mini quilt is a small or miniature quilt is a great way to make blocks and test fabrics. A mini quilt block size usually doesn’t go above 4” generally they don’t measure more than 24” in size.
Mini quilts are perfect to go onto a table as a table topper. You can create a mini quilt wall (a wall where you hang several mini quilts). They care perfect for cushion covers. Just add a pillow cover backing! They can also be used as placemats or cookie crumb catchers. If you have several mini quilts, you can sew them together to make a throw quilt.
This mini quilt measures approximately 16” x 16”. The Heart and Shoo Fly panel measures approximately 12” x 12”. This was a really quick and easy project to do.
The Heart block is done completely in the hoop. The Shoo Fly block is done in 3 hoopings. Both blocks use the “sew & flip” method. It is similar to foundation piecing only it is adapted for machine embroidery. This gives precise placement of the fabrics and joining them together in the hoop. The blocks are quilted in the hoop.
The blocks are joined and a border and backing are added using a sewing machine.
The approximate finished measurements of this table runner is 16” x 6”.
The design comes in 4x4 size. See PDF below for sizes and details.
